Dr. Terry Rustin Joins La Hacienda Medical Team

The most recent addition to the La Hacienda medical team, Dr. Terry A. Rustin, MD, is a veteran physician with a primary interest in patients with co-occurring addictions and mental illness.

Dr. Rustin served 21 years on the faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where he trained medical students and residents, and ran an addiction treatment program.

“I am thrilled to have Dr. Rustin join our staff,” said Medical Director Dr. James Boone. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in psychiatry and addiction medicine. I’m honored to work with him.”

SAMHSA Cites Rustin’s Program

In 1998, Dr. Rustin designed and implemented a comprehensive, integrated program for the treatment of patients with co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorders. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) designated it one of the nation’s seven outstanding programs for the treatment of these patients.

He also taught in the UT Health Science Center’s School of Nursing, training nurse practitioners and helping develop the Doctor of Nursing program.

Most recently, he was a consultant in internal medicine, addiction medicine, and psychiatry, and worked for JSA Health, providing telepsychiatry in West Texas.

Making a Difference in Lives Since 1971

Dr. Rustin holds a Doctor of Medicine from the Oregon Health and Science University and a bachelor’s degree in psychiatry from Stanford University.

He started his first addiction treatment program in 1971 as a second-year medical student with the assistance of a grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

“I have devoted my career of more than 40 years to helping guide patients on the road to recovery,” said Dr. Rustin. “Never once did I doubt the value or importance of this goal.  At the end of every day, I could say that I had made a difference in someone’s life.”

Like Dr. Rustin, members of La Hacienda’s medical staff are carefully chosen for their expertise in treating addiction and also for their compassion for our patients.
